Eastern Promises
By Jandy • Oct 23rd, 2007 • Category: Capsule Reviews •David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen bring us another conflicted crime tale (after they teamed up for A History of Violence a couple of years ago), this time about a midwife (Naomi Watts) drawn into the Russian Mafia when she tries to find out what happened to a teenage girl who died giving birth and the Mafia henchman (Mortensen) who is more than he seems. The layers are many, the violence is intense, and the humanity is paramount. It’s the best film of the year so far.
