Two-Lane Blacktop

It’s about a couple of guys who drag race their way across the US, eventually challenging a guy with a sleek sports car to a long-distance race to Washington D.C. (they’re in, like, Arizona when they start) for pink slips. In the meantime, a random girl has joined the entourage and shifts back and forth between the two cars every once in a while. The race itself devolves in importance as the rivalry over the girl increases, and the opposing drivers end up helping each other more often than not. In short, it isn’t the race that matters, it’s the driving. It’s a great road film and a great example of 1970s independent filmmaking; ambiguous, simultaneously arty and gritty, and never boring despite the fact that, honestly, not much really happens.
